Des Sheridan

About The Triskell Mystery – an action thriller with a supernatural twist

The story revolves around an ancient Celtic artefact that can divine the future. A poem, found hidden with a hoard of gold in a megalithic tomb in Ireland, triggers a race across Spain, England and France in search of missing parts of the device. Fast-paced action scenes unfold in dramatic locations, including Mont St Michel in Normandy. The modern-day action is juxtaposed with historical chapters that relate how the Triskell has survived down the centuries, safeguarded by those sworn to its protection.

The protagonists are Tara Ruane, who discovers the tomb and is plagued by disturbing prophetic dreams, and Robert Grainger, a security consultant charged with protecting the excavation and its treasure. Their attempt to unravel the archaeological puzzle careers out of control and into a desperate scramble to stay alive and one step ahead of a powerful and murderous pursuer, Pascal de Waverin Looz.

The story explores the nature of good and evil, taking the two main characters on a journey of discovery about themselves, each other and the supernatural in the face of mounting threats to their lives.

About the author

Des Sheridan is an Irishman who now lives in the Lake District of England. He is inspired to write by the buildings, places and histories he encounters in his travels and reading, and by the simple desire to tell stories to divert and entertain. He thinks we need to find new ways of thinking about our global future and believes that revisiting the legends and myths of the past, and listening to their ancient voices, is a good place to start.

About Dostoyevsky in Hollywood:

If Hollywood story editor Sylvia Skinner doesn’t turn things around, the network will cancel “The Guardians”, a failing TV cop series set in Cleveland. So she hatches a bold plan: Hire the greatest 19th century writers and pay them at 19th century rates! Recruiting great writers is no problem for Sylvia, who moonlights as a time traveler. But it all goes wrong when she hires Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a man whose passions give new meaning to the term obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This beautifully encapsulates the drama and historical reach of the novel.
Philip Brebner

About A Country of Vanished Dreams

‘Sad is the day when the children of our revolution become our enemies.’

1987. Algeria is on the brink of civil war. In the market square in El Oued, a political fugitive Rahwun poses as a Storyteller. He narrates the tales that constitute the history of that magical and formidable country, fables of times of intrigue and of strife, of children sold and of women forsaken, of families uprooted and of families emigrating to France, of disillusionment and disappointment, of wars and war. Drawn by Rahwun’s wit, wisdom and compassion, his listeners return week after week to piece together the ragged fragments that make a mysterious, sinister and subversive whole. But Rahwun is unaware his chronicles of Algeria past and present are being recorded by an undercover policeman—or is he?

‘A brilliant combination of the historian and the teller of tales. Readers are likely to be reminded of Midnight’s Children, but Brebner is an absolute original.’ Penelope Fitzgerald (Booker Prize Winner).

About The Fabulous Road:

The Cook. The Dervish. The Geographer. The Artist. The Jongleur. The Scholar. The Historian….a group of Muslims in a fictitious island country west of Morocco are imprisoned and await execution for petty crimes. They all have one regret—not to have done the pilgrimage to Mecca. A talking parrot, centuries old, flies into their cell and shakes them up, suggesting they undertake the overland pilgrimage in their minds. Thus the prisoners imagine the journey, weaving geography, history, food, literature to travel a fabulous road across North African and Egypt, accompanied by the convivial parrot and his recollections of the past. But who will ultimately reach Mecca, as one by one the men are dragged out of the cell…?

About Shadows of Marrakech:

Running a bed and breakfast in a riad in exotic Marrakech is not the escape it seemed for Ramzi, a disillusioned Scottish scientist. He cannot decide who are more exasperating, staff or guests, especially when one of the visitors gets murdered in the city. Up for a challenge, Ramzi turns detective and makes his own investigations. The search for motive and murderer leads from an exorcism in Marrakech, across the Atlas to the disturbing Blue Rocks, and comedy turns to tragedy as Ramzi uncovers the truth.

About Lighter than Air:

1982 Lakehurst New Jersey; crash site of the Hindenburg. Alone in a motel room, Peter Miller remembers how as a German ten year old he stowed away on a Zeppelin that was shot down in a bombing raid over London in 1916. The only survivor, he was raised as an English orphan. Becoming a Fleet Street journalist and dispatched to Berlin, he reported on the Graf Zeppelin’s luxury passenger flights to Cairo, where an accident left him convalescing in Egypt. On his return, he found a changing Germany. Blown between politics, loyalties and love in the inter-war years, and entangled in the British and German airship triumphs and disasters of the time, Peter realizes that he overlooked a simple event that could have grounded and fulfilled his life. But is it too late?
